Project 102 - Studio Flat Pack Furniture

Drawing on your experiences of the previous project - 101 CNC table - design a free standing shelf unit or table for the unit space using only one 1220mm by 2440mm sheet of 25mm plywood. It is required that the shelf or table be assembled without glue, screws or other mechanical fasteners.

You should also consider how many offcuts are generated when your piece is fabricated, in order for your design to be considered sustainable it is required to have the minimum possible wastage.

Once you have a scaled working prototype of the shelf you should produce a 2d cad drawing of your design so that the final model can be fabricated using the laser cutter.

Tutorials: Friday 30th September 2011 and Tuesday 4th October 2011.

Exhibition of Prototypes: Friday 7th October.

Hand in date for finished sheets: Friday 14th October 2011.

Project 101 - CNC table

This is the 8x4=2 table by Barnaby Gunning Architects. Download the template as a pdf or as a dxf file. Print out the pdf on a sheet of A4 and bring with you on Tuesday 27th September 2011.

You will also need to bring:
  • No. 3 Swann-Morton Scalpel and 10A blades
  • Cutting Mat
  • P.V.A. white glue
  • Masking Tape
  • Steel ruler
  • Laptop (if you have one) running Photoshop and InDesign
  • Digital Camera (if you have one)

We will begin to set up templates for our portfolio sheets and process diaries in order to make decisions on the layout of text and graphics and to choose the fonts we will use, their weight and size.

The process diary is a record of your thought processes and collates how your more refined portfolio sheets have been researched and realised. It records preliminary ideas and design iterations as well as capturing the development of models and material studies.

Developing a methodology for recording your thought processes and the initial formation of your design proposal is key to integrating the process diary into your design strategy and workflow. It is essential that the portfolio and process diary are graphically integrated.

Alongside the portfolio the process diary is a required outcome for both second and third years.
